About e-Residency

Everyone who has carried out business activities in foreign countries knows how much time paperwork takes. In addition, papers include fraud risks as it is not difficult to falsify signatures. Estonia is an oasis in this respect: the rest of the world operates in the old-fashioned way with the support of post and paper. Difficulties for a foreigner without an Estonian ID-card when dealing with administration in Estonia are nothing different in this respect.

A possibility to receive the necessary services from the Internet gives an entrepreneur the freedom to enjoy the Estonian e-state behind a laptop in beautiful places all over the world. One can sign agreements via Internet when having an Estonian ID-card without a fare of frauds. No envelopes with documents, searching for a one-day return flight to Tallinn or mandatory meetings with officials and bankers – this is the e-Estonia.

What is an e-Residency?

An e-Resident is an individual who has received the e-Resident’s digital identity (smart ID-card) from the Republic of Estonia. Important to note that this will not entail full legal residency, tax residency, citizenship either a right of entry to Estonia.

The e-Residence can be used only in a digital environment for identifying a person and providing a digital signature. With the support of certificates on the chip card it is possible to identify your person and provide a digital signature in an electronic environment. As the document is not usable for visual identification nor travelling, it does not include a photo.

The e-Residency card has security certificates. These enable the card to be used with a piece of software installed and a reader attached via USB to a computer. It works on two-factor authentication. To get access to a service or provide digital signatures to the documents, you need to enter secure PIN which only you will know.

What benefits are available to the e-Residents?

E-Resident can:

  • Sign documents and contracts digitally
  • Encrypt and transmit documents securely
  • Verify the authenticity of signed documents
  • Establish an Estonian company online within one business day (at the moment a physical address in Estonia is required, which may be obtained using an external service provider)
  • Conduct e-banking and remote money transfers
  • Access online payment service providers
  • Declare Estonian taxes online (e-Residency does not automatically establish a tax residency)

Why is the e-Residency useful for an entrepreneur?

You can:

  • Use Estonian public services online via portal
  • Establish Estonian companies online via Company Registration Portal
  • Administer the company from anywhere in the world
  • View your tax accounts and submit tax returns online via e-Tax Board
  • Access all your bank accounts with a single smart card
  • Use Estonian digital signature on any official document (such documents will be acceptable all over the EU as of 2016)
  • Use free encrypting service

E-Residents can be part of digital revolution; at these times you can become an e-Estonian as an early adaptor.

How can I get it?

As of May 2015, it is possible to apply for an e-Residency online at the webpage here.

The average processing time for e-Residency is one month, but it may vary based on demand and pickup location. After you have submitted an online application you will have to pick up the card from the Estonian embassy or consulate. The list of such embassies and consulates can be found at the webpage here.

How much e-Residency costs?

A state fee of EUR 100 and a credit card processing fee of EUR 0.99 is payable by Visa or Mastercard.
