Marek Helm, the head of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board, was asked about the tax authority’s future vision at the press conference. The idea is that no-one needs to visit tax authorities anymore. All you need in the future is a smartphone for checking whether all taxes are duly paid.
The Tax Foundation held a reception honoring Estonia for having the most competitive tax system among the 34 member nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) according to our 2015 International Tax Competitiveness Index.
Tax Foundation's report, which was released Monday morning, found 31 of the 34 developed countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development have a better tax code than the US. Only France and Portugal ranked lower, the report said.
Value-added tax, known as VAT, is levied on goods and services sold in the course of business activity, import of goods from non-EU countries and acquisition of goods from European Union countries. Value-added tax is paid by the end consumer.
